Rafting the Arkansas River Near Buena Vista

The Arkansas River runs right past BV and offers some of the best whitewater in the country. Here is what you need to know before you go.

Buena Vista sits on the upper Arkansas River, which cuts a wide valley between the Collegiate Peaks and the Mosquito Range. From early May through mid-August, the river is running hard with snowmelt and the stretch from BV south through Browns Canyon National Monument draws rafters from across the country.

You do not need to be experienced to enjoy rafting here. The Browns Canyon run is well-suited to beginners and families, and every outfitter in town offers guided half-day trips. If you want something more technical, harder sections of the river are accessible the same day.

๐Ÿž๏ธ Browns Canyon National Monument

Class III – IV ยท The most popular run from BV

Browns Canyon became a National Monument in 2015, protecting the granite canyon walls and the river corridor just south of BV. The whitewater here runs Class III to IV, meaning there are definite rapids and some adrenaline, but it is guided every day of the season and well within reach for most healthy adults. Highlights include Zoom Flume, Big Drop, and Staircase rapids.

The typical Browns Canyon guided trip runs about 14 miles and takes 3 to 4 hours on the water. Half-day and full-day options are available from multiple outfitters based right in BV. Most trips include a riverside lunch on full-day runs. No prior experience needed.
