Ski Resorts Near Buena Vista, Colorado

BV sits in the middle of central Colorado, within a one to two hour drive of five ski areas. That means one home base, no need to switch hotels mid-trip, and lodging prices that don't carry a resort-town markup.

Most Colorado ski trips force a choice: stay slopeside and pay resort-town prices, or stay somewhere cheap and drive an hour each way from a random highway town. Buena Vista solves that differently. It's a nice mountain town in its own right, with a walkable Main Street, hot springs, and a real local food and beer scene, and it happens to sit within striking distance of half a dozen ski areas.

Our property is a quiet, spacious home base for a multi-day ski trip: room to spread out gear, a driveway that fits trucks and trailers, and a washer and dryer for wet layers. Below is what's actually within reach, with honest drive times.

Monarch Mountain

The local favorite

~32 miles · ~55 min

US-285 S to Poncha Springs, then US-50 W over Monarch Pass

Closest real ski resort to BV and the one locals actually ski. Independent, uncrowded, 350" average annual snowfall, and lift tickets that don't require a mortgage. No lodging at the base worth mentioning, which is exactly why staying in BV works so well.

Ski Cooper

Small, cheap, mellow

~38 miles · ~50 min

US-24 N over Trout Creek Pass toward Leadville

A tiny, old-school ski area outside Leadville with some of the cheapest lift tickets in Colorado. Great for beginners, families, and anyone who wants a low-key day on snow without the production of a big resort.

Copper Mountain

Big terrain, I-70 access

~55 miles · ~1 hr 10 min

US-24 N through Leadville to I-70 at Copper Mountain

A legitimate destination resort with terrain naturally split by ability level, so beginners, intermediates, and experts each get their own section of the mountain without running into each other.

Breckenridge

The big name

~65 miles · ~1 hr 25 min

US-24 N to I-70 W, or over Hoosier Pass from the south

Five peaks, a fun historic downtown, and the crowds and prices that come with being one of the most famous ski towns in the country. Worth the extra drive time for a day trip if you want the full resort-town experience.

Crested Butte

Expert terrain, small town

~65 miles · ~1 hr 30 min

US-285 S / US-50 W to Gunnison, then CO-135 N

Steep, technical, and lightly trafficked compared to the I-70 corridor resorts. A great day trip if your group can handle advanced terrain, with a charming Victorian-era main street to explore afterward.

Why Stay in Buena Vista Instead of a Ski Town

  • ✓Lodging prices without the resort-town markup, even during peak holiday weeks.
  • ✓A real town to come back to, with restaurants, a brewery, and hot springs 20 minutes away.
  • ✓One home base for a trip that hits multiple resorts, instead of packing up and moving hotels.
  • ✓Room for gear, trucks, and trailers. Our circular driveway fits vehicles that a downtown ski-town condo never could.
  • ✓A washer and dryer for drying out wet gear between days on snow.
  • ✓Lower elevation than most ski bases (7,900 ft vs. 10,000+ ft), which some guests find easier to sleep at.

Mountain Driving Notes

Monarch Pass and Trout Creek Pass are both maintained year-round, but winter conditions can change fast. All-wheel or four-wheel drive is recommended for mountain pass driving, and traction laws are commonly in effect on I-70 and US-50 during storms. Check COtrip.org before heading out, and give yourself extra time on powder days.
